Mystic Tree Halts Airport Work

A mystical twist has delayed the inauguration of the new 2.9 km taxiway at Surat International Airport. A 10-foot-tall sacred tree, believed by locals to be the dwelling of a Yakshini—a female nature spirit from ancient folklore—stands in the taxiway’s path.
Due to strong cultural and spiritual beliefs, airport authorities have postponed the launch and are exploring transplantation options near the airport’s fire station. The tree is currently under inspection to ensure its safe relocation without disrupting local sentiments.
This incident highlights how tradition and development often intersect in India’s rapidly growing cities.
