Gandhi Assassination Book Event Cancelled in Surat Over Security Fears
City police in Surat cancelled a planned closed-door event focused on a book discussing Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, citing security threats and potential disruptions to law and order.
Organizers had scheduled this session as the fourth in a series of intellectual discussions, following successful events in Ahmedabad and Vadodara. However, just before the event, Surat authorities stepped in due to the topic’s sensitive nature and its potential impact on public safety.
Although disappointed, the organizers acknowledged the importance of maintaining peace. The book explores the historical, political, and ideological motives behind Gandhi’s assassination, sparking both academic interest and controversy.
This cancellation highlights ongoing tensions over how India interprets its historical narratives, especially those involving national figures like Mahatma Gandhi.
