India-EU Car Tariff Talks Heat

The European Union is intensifying trade negotiations with India, urging the country to significantly reduce its steep import duties on foreign automobiles. Presently, India levies tariffs that exceed 100% on imported vehicles—a major point of contention in the discussions. To promote a mutually beneficial agreement, India is contemplating a gradual reduction of these tariffs to as low as 10%.
However, Indian car manufacturers are resisting this move, arguing that lower tariffs could threaten domestic production and jobs by allowing cheaper imports to flood the market. As the talks progress, a balance between fostering international trade and safeguarding local industry remains at the heart of the debate.
