Farmers Demand Fair Water Use
In Sriganganagar, Rajasthan, farmers have launched an indefinite protest over the sharp drop in water supply through the Gang Canal, which originates in Punjab. Under the interstate agreement, Rajasthan is entitled to receive 2,000 cusecs of water. However, current flow has dropped drastically to 400–700 cusecs, while Punjab is drawing over 3,000 cusecs.
This water shortage is severely affecting the sowing of cotton and cottonseed crops, leading to widespread unrest. Farmers have blocked roads and received backing from several political leaders, demanding immediate corrective action and restoration of Rajasthan’s rightful water share.
The issue highlights the growing interstate water conflicts amid rising agricultural dependency and climate-driven challenges in India.
