New Criminal Laws in Gujarat
The Gujarat government has been instructed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to implement three major reforms in the criminal justice system: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA). These new laws will be rolled out across all commissionerates by April 30, 2025, and extended statewide shortly after.
Designed to modernize India’s outdated legal framework, the updated laws focus on faster justice delivery, the use of technology in investigations and trials, and enhanced transparency. Key provisions also address the digital recording of evidence, defined timelines for investigations, and stricter enforcement protocols.
Amit Shah also praised Gujarat’s legal system for its effective implementation of Zero FIR conversion and timely filing of charge sheets, setting a benchmark for other states to follow.
These initiatives aim to ensure better accountability, citizen protection, and efficient justice, positioning Gujarat as a leader in national legal reform.
